Chapter Seven

Enduring Love

“Where is he?” Joshua asked as he looked around the church.

“Who you talking about, dude-roni?” Benjamin asked.

“Just a friend,” Joshua said as his eyes continued to search up and down the aisles.

“Listenski, the wedding’s about to start. You ready? You gouda? No second thoughtsaroni?” Benjamin asked Joshua as he straightened his tie.

Joshua stared at Benjamin and shook his head.

“Just checking, bro-dude. The best of man has to double checky this stuff.”

“Guys, five more minutes,” said Jake.

“Man, I’m really glad you got to make it to my wedding. It means a lot.”

“I’m delighted you invited me. I wouldn’t have missed it. But, I still can’t believe you wanted me to be your groomsman,” said Jake.

“Well, man, we are friends. Who else would I pick but my science partner,” Joshua said as he glanced one more time throughout the church for his friend.

Meanwhile, on the other side of the church, Michelle was helping Mary get ready. Mary chose Michelle to be her maid of honor and asked a long-time childhood friend of hers, Betsy Williams, to be her bridesmaid. Betsy had flown in from Medway, Massachusetts, to help her friend. She had moved right before high school started, and this was the first time they saw each other in a long while.

“Who are you looking for?” Betsy asked.

Mary and Joshua had talked the night before about Mr. Rogers. They both hoped he would make it to the wedding and was concerned about his health.

“I’m just looking for a friend,” Mary said.

“Well, I’m right here, so look no further,” Betsy said, fixing Mary’s train.

“Yeah, and I’m here too, and it’s almost time,” Michelle blurted out.

There was a knock at the door.

“Sweetheart, you almost—wow! You… you look so beautiful,” Mr. Underwood said as he choked on his words.

“Thanks, Dad.”

“We’ll see you out there,” Michelle said as she and Betsy left the room.

Mr. Underwood admired his daughter for a moment. His little girl was grown up. She was moving on to be her own woman. “How could this be?” he thought. He swallowed hard, lifted his head, smiled, and took his daughter’s hand as the music began to play.

While the melodious music filled the sanctuary, family and friends stood to their feet while Mr. Underwood led his daughter down the aisle to her soon-to-be husband.

“Who gives this woman to be married to this man?” Pastor John asked.

“I do,” Mr. Underwood replied.

Pastor John continued the wedding ceremony as Joshua and Mary held hands. They continued to look into each other’s eyes, mouthing words back and forth.

“I love you,” Joshua whispered.

“I love you too,” Mary whispered back.

As the pastor continued speaking, it was as if Joshua and Mary were in a world of their own.

The couple exchanged their promises to one another, Mary went first, then Joshua.

“I, Mary, take you, Joshua, to be my lawfully-wedded husband. I promise to love you as Christ loves us. I promise to be faithful, obedient, and honor you through good times and bad times and through sickness and health, until death do us part.
